Kodak I2420 Scanner Drivers
Kodak Alaris has several integration options for our scanners. We have traditional thick client integration options with our TWAIN and ISIS and WIA drivers as well as an easy to use Scanner SDK. We also have a state of the art RESTful Web API for integration to our network enabled scanners from any platform without installing host drivers.
Kodak I2420 Scanner Drivers
Installing the scanner drivers from the link on the bottom of this page will install the latest SVT (Scanner Validation Tool), TWAIN Data Source, the latest ISIS Driver and the latest WIA-STI drivers for the i2000 Series Scanners.
The Kodak i2420 Scanner ($845) is obviously intended for a workgroup or small office, with its 75-page automatic document feeder (ADF), its 40-page-per-minute (ppm) and 80-image-per-minute (ipm) speed ratings, and its recommended daily volume of up to 5,000 pages per day. However, it's small enough to share a desk with easily, so it can also serve as a personal document scanner if you have unusually heavy-duty scan needs. More important, it can be an excellent fit in either role, making it our Editors' Choice small-office document scanner.
Setup and Software Physically similar to the Kodak i2400 that it's in the process of replacing in Kodak Alaris's line, the i2420 weighs 12 pounds, and it measures 9.7 by 13 by 6.3 inches (HWD) with the trays closed and the scanner body in a vertical orientation. To use it, you rotate the body so it's at an angle to the base instead of straight up and down, and then open the trays. When you're not using it, however, you can return it to the vertical position, which minimizes the amount of space it takes up and helps makes it easier to share a desk with.
For my tests, I connected the i2420 to a system running Windows Vista. Setup is standard for a USB-connected scanner. Simply plug in the power cord, install the software from disc, and connect the supplied USB cable. If you need a flatbed, as well as an ADF, you can add one as an accessory, with a choice of legal-size ($495) or A3-size ($1,400) models, which will also work with tabloid-size paper .
Kodak Alaris includes essentially the same applications with the i2420 as with its earlier-generation Kodak i2400, but in updated versions, with Nuance PaperPort 14 for document management and OmniPage 18 for optical-character recognition (OCR). Both are among the best available in their categories. In addition, the Twain, ISIS, and WIA drivers will, between them, let you scan directly from virtually any Windows program that includes a scan command.
The i2420 comes with two scan utilities. One, which I used for my tests, installs along with the drivers and offers all the features that most small offices need, including options to scan to SharePoint, Evernote, Google Drive, and Box. The other, which you can optionally install from a second disc, offers more advanced features. For example, it will let you batch scan, so you can put multiple documents in one stack of pages, and save each one in a different file. You can separate the documents by a blank page, a page with a bar code, or by specifying some number of pages per document. Kodak Alaris also provides a Software Overview page in the documentation to help you choose which utility to use.
Performance Optical resolution for the i2420 is 600 pixels per inch (ppi), which is typical for document scanners and more than you need for most purposes. For my tests I used the default setting of 200ppi and the predefined settings for black-and-white documents.
The i2420 did better than most scanners on our OCR accuracy test. The combination of scanner and software managed to read the text on our Times New Roman test page at sizes as small as 8 points and on our Arial test page at sizes as small as 6 points without a mistake. This level of accuracy isn't unusual. However, the scanner also did well on an assortment of other fonts we don't usually report on because most scanners do so badly with them. With these harder-to-read fonts, the i2420 read one at 5 points, one at 6 points, one at 8 points, and one at 12 points without a mistake.
If your scanning needs are just a step below what those three models offer, however, the Kodak i2420 Scanner is the obvious pick. It delivers a suitably high-capacity ADF, higher maximum recommended daily volume than you probably need in a small office, world-class programs for the applications you most likely need, and only a slightly slower speed than you'd get with the next step up. The combination makes it our Editors' Choice small-office document scanner.
